5 Things That Being a Young Wife Has Taught Me!

marriage relationships May 24, 2023

1. Don't let anyone look down on you

"Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity." - 1 Timothy 4:12

When you're a young wife, people will tend to say things like, "Wow, you're married!? Why'd you get married so young?" or "Why didn't you wait a little longer?" When you first encounter these comments, you may feel a bit belittled... like, am I not qualified for marriage because of my age? I know people who are old, whose marriages are breaking apart. I also know people who are young with God as a strong foundation. On the know the reverse side... I've seen young people who jumped into a marriage, only for it to result in divorce 6 months down the line, and I've seen older couples flourish in their marriage even after many years in the game.

So don't be ashamed if you got married young. Sometimes you may feel out of the loop. In your city, you may feel like all the couples around you are older and there's no one you can relate to... but believe it or not, there are WAY more young married couples around the world than you think. You are not alone! The most important thing in a marriage is to keep God at the center. Fight for your marriage through prayer and learn to forgive and love your spouse unconditionally. Marriage won't always be easy, but if you're willing to commit to the process, no matter your age, you are bound to see great results!

2. It's OK to grow together!

"But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come." - John 16:13

Sometimes people make you feel like you're not good enough to be married if you don't have it all together. If you don't have the degree, the house, and the car, then in the world's eyes, you're not ready. But what if God never called you to school? What if the material life you have in mind is not a part of His plans for you? What if He has called you and your one-day family to be traveling missionaries? You'd never know if you keep delaying his plans with your own. Then when you finally meet your one-day spouse, you have to sell that house, give away that car and surrender everything anyway because it was never a part of God's plan for your life in the first place!

Seek God before all things. Follow as He leads. We don't live by the world's "formula" of success. We live by God's word and the leading of the Holy Spirit. One of my favorite things about my marriage is that my husband and I have gone through so much together and those times always bring us closer. We both attended school while still married. We're both first-generation entrepreneurs and I love that these are new experiences we get the share, grow through, and learn in.

3. Live life with NO regrets

"Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus." - 1 Thessalonians 5:18

People will say, "Well don't you wish you would've traveled more? Gotten the chance to study abroad? Had more time to yourself? etc.?" Honey-- my answer is "no." Those things are great and all but now that I am married, I wouldn't trade my family for a thing! Rather than sulking about "what I could've done"... I thank God for my life NOW and everything I CAN do with my family. You can always look to the other side of the grass and want what someone else has but it's all an illusion. I choose to be grateful for my portion because I know that someone would LOVE to be in my shoes.

4. Be led by God's word, not Old Wives Tales

"Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path." - Psalm 119:105

According to the Old Wives, pregnancy and labor have to be the worst painfully dreadful experiences of life! But I chose to love and savor every moment of my pregnancies and my labors were a beautiful experience that I'll never forget! God promises us peace, that He will be our strength in time of need, and that we have no reason to fear. I choose to rest and trust in His promises. I filmed my labor and delivery stories HERE.

5. Enjoy every season

"There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens..." - Ecclesiastes 3:1

When you get married, the next question many people will ask is, "When are you having kids?" Shortly after kids, they will ask, "When are you going to buy a house?" Be sure to enjoy every single season and don't let anybody pressure you into the next! There is a time for everything and God's timing is perfect. :)
